I have not thought deeply about the need of studying a degree in linguistics, but I see more and more the need.
It is not only about clarifying the language, evolving it, and other intrinsic technical aspects. It is about communication.
A good applied mathematician, such as an engineer, might be able to solve a problem either faster or more holistically because of her/his knowledge of number, operators, and logic.
Someone who masters linguistics would be able to convey a thought or a representation clearly and effectively, not only because of her/his extensive vocabulary, but also because of the sentence, paragraph, body structure, and style!
Reading and writing are such a key elements to actively include in any curricula, particularly in the technical ones.
