Three To Get Married

Berkeley, Monday, February 23, 2026 0:28 AM

Might more than two weeks ago at least, I finished reading this book on the title, written by (soon to become Blessed) Fulton Sheen.

While I should keep a better track of reading notes, while I read the book, instead of only keeping in my memory.

I lay out here few learnings, to which I might add in the future or time by time as I recall them or open the book.

The evident book them is clearly on the title. God is infinite and eternal love. God is love. Two persons in love are going to have several dark nights. One of them needs to carry the cross, which is the other, and probably, and hopefully vice-versa.

The only way t carry an external situation or person is through love.

One must not allow one heart to be filled up with any resentment or stain of sin. God, love, forgives.

However, one is able to carry all the situations if God, love, is in one’s heart.

One cannot carry two crosses and make progress.

Look at the Lord Jesus [my comment here] on His way to crucifixion. Look to him when he felt with the cross on His back. Remember that Simeon helped Him to carry His cross to the Calvary. But Jesus was carrying one cross, not two crosses.

If one has something heavy or not a clean heart or not a clean spirit or not a clean soul, i.e. resement, lack of forgiveness, envy, etc.. any sin. One has two crosses. One can carry external crosses, but one cannot carry the self-cross.

So everything is possible for the Lord, as long as we serve Him. He is the third, or rather the first person, in a relationship. He is the common love.

The last part of the book, which I see some notes, here from when I first attempted to write those this post, has several case examples from couples who sacrifice from the other.

Now, I recall somethings. I believe, but this is from sometime ago, that Blessed Sheen wrote in his book that man represent Jesus Christ in the matrimony, and woman represents the Church.

He also said something like woman is the level of culture of society. Probably an interpretation could be one can see how safe, well respected, probably free, loved, etc is women in a society. That might represent that household and society in general. But read about this.

He talked about intercourse. i am not recalling his specific words now. But in general that is the full giving to one person. That is the full marriage consumption. That is reserved for husband and wife. Details of the act is usually not the topic of conversation outside of marriage. Check sources. It can be.

He talked about abortion and contraception. He said that a tree or a plant growing in one’s yard has the right, or is natural to her, to grow branches. If one cuts its branches, it is going against nature. [Details manicuring a plant or tree is often welcoming and needed though. But also that though is in an urban environment or in a park]. That just talking about trees in a yard. It is, probably, our nature to have as many children as one can with the same wife, as hopefully she is alive as well in the path.

Towards the end of the chapter, I was delighted to read that he had some Russian stories to share. I was delighted because with all the noise about the Government of that country, we do not always pray or think or talk about the routinely citizens there.

Well, Fulton Sheen talked about the Decembrist women. Those were a few stories that some men who were sent to the Siberia in a certain regime or in need for working conditions. He talked about strugles that women faced in their times and society in their decision to respect their commitment to follow their husbands. Several beautiful stories. One is below, probably about Ekaterina Trubetskaya

Russian Women by Nikolay Nekrasov,

There were other stories about a Prince or Duque from Orleans. He married a noble woman from Austria. Her prior fiance did not want to marry her. The prior fiance was an Austrian aristocrat. She was in the marriage with the Duque from Orleans. But she was sent to the lunatic asylum. Her husband supported her in the process. In the asylum she tried or wanted to have sexual, intercourse, relationships with her psychiatrist. I do not recall all the details. The sexual relationships I do not think they happened. Well she confessed everything to her husband. He forgave her. It might be that love. She decided to fully embrace the Catholic religion. She became a third order Dominican secular, I believe. In a charity feast, at times, where just the filming video tape has started since its invention. I think it was invented by Luminen, and they are also were present in the charity event. The camera caught fair. She was on the stage. More things started to caught fire. People tried to help her to get out. But she said, I am here to serve others. Started helping everyone to get out. But she died there. Her husband, I believe became a Third Order Franciscan Order.

Those might be extreme cases. But the point Fulton Sheen was making with the stories was that everything is bearable to God not to the self. But one needs to be clean to bear things or bear people or more important to love people. [A few additional comments not from the book] Intimacy is the truth or telling the truth.

But that of course, needs to be complemented with more readings or empirical aspects, which is about listening.
