I haven’t learned about Cacique Duma in detail yet, but I know he was the sort of King, or the equivalent to Cacique in another language, from the Cañari people, who lived in Cuenca Ecuador, and likely many of the Cañari people still live there, either by knowing or not. This for the mestizaje process.
Cuenca has done great over time in naming key places with the location where people lived… Apologies, I interrupted myself with another stuff.
Same as the Catholic Church and naming places after Saints, Holy Trinity, Our Lady, events… etc… It is great to have a living history of actions and events of people, culture, significant places… etc.
A bit sad of the dismounted of statutes that happened throughout several places of the United States around 2020. History, is history for the good and the bad. An influence is not necessary imposed on something, it can provide a good memory, but also bad memories are good for the future. It is worst to not know about things.
Back to the topic, I think it is interesting that Duma is a cañari last name. Of course, phonetically, there are a lot similitudes of words between languages.
But I am surprised how close Duma is to the French last name Dumas.
Dumas come from the South of France north of Spain. Other related last names with Dumas, which are know because of athletes or else, are Mas and Manso.
There was not connection before 1492 between Cañaris and Spaniards and Europeans, or probably not that often. Yes, there was a connection about 12,000 years ago when Cañaris among others were travelling through the Siberian, then to North America, and then to South America.
