Which one was first: steel or nylon string in acoustic guitars?

This is almost waking up type, while of course my whole body and brain is hating me for being awake, then I will drop a link in here to read some time about the history of steel and nylon strings in guitars:

I think it is fantastic the many things that we can do with wood, and materials in general. Of course nylon is a more synthetic material, that would give some attraction to the steel strings. But I think that for many more years strings were made rather from animals than from steel, but I do not know yet about the topic. I only know for sure than the harp has been around for probably more than 4,000 years.
